Same development as in Europe where we stopped paying farmers to produce wine lakes and butter mountains and paid them to look after the countryside. This is about saving our planet by preserving habitats and loss of species. Farmers will be receiving MORE money for doing different things.

From next season onwards companies HAVE to pay $400 premium on market prices to farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast (2/3 of global cocoa production) due to the cartel of the two countries being formed in 2019. So the premium that they pay at present through Fair Trade is only $240. They also are joining the Rainforest alliance which have a different concept and are more focused on a multi stakeholder approach inc. more focus on the environement.

Our only hope is that with public pressure and awareness of this issue, they will reconsider. For once do the right thing Nestle!

Nestle could stand out as a beacon of fairness by providing good prices to cocoa farmers to ensure that they can afford healthcare and education and rise up out of poverty. How can leadership sleep at night knowing that they can only measure their own fortune and not be concerned about the welfare of the labor force that make their products possible. Stand up for the right thing and make all of your products fair trade. Rainforest Alliance is nothing but a green stamp – it has zero meaning.

I saw their use of Fairtrade for KitKat as a sign of hope that they would find they could make a fair profit whilst adopting Fairtrade principles. I will stop buying KitKat when I see that Nestle no longer source their cocoa and sugar from Fairtrade producers.

Be fair. Be responsible. I will not remain your customer if fair wages are stripped from these workers.
